Questions and answers
The things people ask most about Quiltoku, answered plainly. If yours is not here, the contact page is the way to ask.
Playing
Is it free?
Yes. There is no charge, no account and no sign-up. The site is supported by advertising, and the daily puzzle is never interrupted by an ad while you are playing it.
Do I need to know Sudoku?
No. If you can see which colour is missing from a row, you can play. The tutorial takes about five minutes, and the solving guide covers the thinking behind it.
Is the daily puzzle the same for everyone?
Yes. Everyone in the world gets the same board on the same day, so you can compare notes. Its size and style follow the day of the week: small and easy early in the week, bigger boards toward the weekend, with the biggest challenges on Saturday and Sunday.
I missed a day. Is my streak gone?
A streak counts days you solved on the day itself. If you miss a whole day, the streak ends. You can still solve any past puzzle from the calendar, and it still earns a tick there, just an outlined one. Your streak is shown as a brain that grows with the hardest day in the run and changes metal as the run gets longer: bronze at a week, silver at a month, gold at a season and platinum at a year.
What is a "Double" puzzle?
Two puzzles in one: every square holds a big mark and a small circle, and each layer is solved on its own. See the variants guide.
What do hints cost?
On the daily puzzle you get a few free reveals, and you can earn more by sharing your result or keeping a streak. In levels, each hint costs a star. Hints never cost you the level itself.
Your game and your data
Where is my progress kept?
On your own device, in your browser. There is no account and no copy on a server. That also means clearing your browser's site data clears your progress, and that a different phone starts fresh unless you move your game across. In Settings, under Your game, you can make a game code on one device and load it on another. Nothing is sent anywhere.
Does it work offline?
Yes. Once the game has loaded, it keeps working without a connection, and it checks quietly for newer versions when you are back online. You can add it to your home screen on iPhone, iPad and Android, or install it from the browser on a computer.
What do you collect about me?
The short answer is very little. The full answer is on the privacy page, written to be read rather than skimmed.
Languages and accessibility
Is it available in French?
Yes. Choose Language in Settings, or use the French pages from the link at the top of any page. More languages may follow.
I have trouble telling some colours apart.
Quiltoku has shapes and patterns for exactly this reason. In Settings you can choose which kind of mark you prefer, and there is a mode that adds little dots, set out like the positions on a clock, to every colour so that it can be read without relying on the colour at all.
The game itself
Who makes it?
Quiltoku is made by one person, in Canada. The idea for it came from a quilt. The quilt page tells that story.
I found a bug, or I have an idea.
Please write. The contact page has the address. Reports with a device name and what you were doing when it happened are the most useful.
